Cork city is where most of our finished work stands. Smoke City on South Main Street has illuminated letters and a lit logo box over a printed fascia. Phonetastic has red and white lit letters and a round projecting light box that reads from both ends of the street. Dixy Chicken has white built-up letters with red returns and a matching projecting box.

City-centre streets are narrow and busy, so a sign has to work at an angle as much as head-on. Many units also trade late, so lighting matters, and on older buildings we design it with the planning rules in mind.

We cover the suburbs as well as the centre: Bishopstown and Wilton are about seven minutes from the workshop, Blackpool and Mahon around a quarter of an hour. Fitting in the centre usually means an early start before the street fills, and we plan access and any traffic management with you beforehand.

Streets and centres we cover in Cork city

St Patrick's Street, Oliver Plunkett Street and Grand Parade, South Main Street and Cornmarket Street, Opera Lane and Merchant's Quay and Mahon Point, Wilton and Blackpool retail and business parks.

Planning permission

Since the 2019 boundary change, the whole city is in the Cork City Council area. Most shop signs need permission because built-up letters are usually taller than the 300 mm exemption limit. Large parts of the centre also contain protected structures, where no sign is exempt. We prepare scaled drawings and a photo mock-up for the application. Our planning guide explains the limits.

Questions from Cork city

Have you fitted signs in Cork city before?

Yes. Our finished city jobs include Phonetastic, Dixy Chicken, Speedo, Sky Smoke 1 and Smoke City on South Main Street. You can see photos of each on our work page.

Can you fit a sign on a busy city street?

Yes. We usually fit early in the morning, before the street gets busy, and plan any access equipment and traffic arrangements with you and the council in advance.

Do I need permission for a projecting sign in the city?

Not always. A projecting sign can be exempt if it is at least 2 m above the footpath, projects no more than 1 m and stays within the size limits, for example a round sign up to 1 m across. On a protected structure, or where it would affect an architectural conservation area, it needs permission.
